已有近3000名兵變軍人被捕，包括5名將領、9名上校。目前所知叛軍軍階最高者是愛琴海軍區司令哈比倫。另有逾2700名法官遭革職。這場兵變喪生者包括約104名叛軍，還有至少47位平民、41名警察。1架土國軍用直升機於16日早晨在希臘境內降落，機上8人據信為兵變的高階策畫人，他們均向希國尋求政治庇護。土國當局已要求將8人遣送回土境。

    艾爾多安並指控「美國賓州的平行結構」幕後主使兵變，他影射的是流亡賓州的伊斯蘭精神領袖古倫。據稱，土國軍方同情古倫者在艾爾多安接下來的整肅行動中難保職位，可能因此發動政變。不過古倫否認與他有關，並嚴厲譴責這場流產政變。

    叛軍一度占領國營電視台、令其播送一分聲明，宣稱他們已經接掌政權、成立「和平過渡委員會」，並宣布實施戒嚴與宵禁、命令民眾不要出門。奉行世俗主義的叛軍指出，他們的行動是為了「從艾爾多安的伊斯蘭保守派執政黨「正義發展黨」（AKP）手中恢復憲政秩序、民主、自由及保衛人權」。
